Design & build

Plantronics have a lot of experience behind them. In fact, they were the company who built the headsets used in the moon landings. It's safe to say, then, that they know a thing or two about making high-quality headsets. They've brought all that to bear when crafting the C725-M, which makes for a seriously impressive model.

Soft leatherette ear cushions make the Blackwire C725-M comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Ultimately, this is what's really important in terms of headset design. Whether you're just using it for the odd video call, or if you work in a call centre and need to wear it all day, a headset needs to be comfortable and not get in the way.

One thing to mention is that this is a stereo headset. This means that when you put it on, you can focus entirely on what's coming through the speakers; there's no ear left free to distract you with background noise. Some people do prefer mono headsets if they need to keep an ear out for what's going on around them. Generally speaking, though, we prefer stereo headsets for the added focus they provide.

Set up

Most corded headsets are simple to set up, and the Plantronics Blackwire C725-M is no exception. All you need to do is plug it into your computer, and it will automatically install the necessary drivers. In just a few seconds, your new headset will be ready to use!

As you can see in the image above, the C725-M comes with in-line controls. These allow you answer calls, adjust the volume, and mute the microphone, all with just a quick press of a button. The C725-M also comes with an interesting smart sensor technology. This allows you to answer a call simply by placing the headset on your head. That's certainly useful if your job involves regularly taking calls as they come in.

Sound performance

Given its price, you'd naturally want the C725-M to sound good. Thankfully, it does! Wideband stereo and enhanced DSP (digital signal processing) ensure that the headset sounds as good as it possibly can. As well as optimizing call quality, this also makes the Blackwire C725-M great for listening to music as well. This helps to justify the price somewhat, since it's something you can use even when you're not on a call. For this reason, we'd recommend the C725-M to those working in a busy office, where there can be a lot of distracting background noise.

The Plantronics Blackwire C725-M also features active noise cancellation. This means that the built-in microphones on the headset detect, and then cancel out, ambient noise. That way, the person you're talking to gets to hear just your voice, for a clearer conversation both ways. This is the reason why this corded headset is USB and not 3.5mm- the feature requires more power than can be transmitted through a 3.5mm jack. Unfortunately, that means the C725-M is only for use with a computer, rather than your mobile.
